When Should You Seek Emergency Dental Care?

Knowing the right course of action during a dental crisis is crucial.

  • For life-threatening situations (e.g., severe facial injury, uncontrolled bleeding, difficulty breathing), call 911 or go to the nearest hospital emergency room immediately.
  • For urgent dental problems, contact York Dental right away. Prompt treatment can often save your tooth, prevent further damage, and alleviate pain quickly.

Common Dental Emergencies

1. Chipped or Cracked Teeth

A sudden impact from biting something hard, a sports injury, or a fall can easily chip or crack a tooth. This can range from a minor cosmetic issue to severe damage exposing the tooth's inner layers.

  • Gently rinse your mouth with warm water. If there's bleeding, apply gentle pressure using clean gauze.
  • Quick treatment can prevent infection and further breakage and potentially save the tooth from needing more complex procedures.

2. Knocked-Out (Avulsed) Permanent Tooth

Time is absolutely critical when a permanent tooth is knocked out. Acting fast increases the chance of successfully reimplanting the tooth.

  • Pick up the tooth by the crown (the chewing surface), and avoid touching the root.
  • Gently rinse dirt with water (do not scrub or use soap).
  • If possible, gently try to place the tooth back into its socket and hold it there with light pressure (bite on gauze).
  • If you can't replant it, keep the tooth moist: place it in a small container of milk or saline solution or tucked inside your cheek (if the person is old enough not to swallow it). Do not store it in water.

Call York Dental immediately – ideally within 30-60 minutes: The sooner you get here, the better the prognosis for saving your tooth.

3. Loose/Moved Teeth

Trauma can push a tooth out of alignment or make it feel loose in its socket.

  • Using very light finger pressure, you can gently reposition the tooth to its normal alignment. Please do not force it.
  • Avoid chewing on the affected side.

Call our office: We need to stabilize the tooth to prevent further damage and encourage healing.

4. Severe Toothache and  Sensitivity

Intense or persistent tooth pain is often a sign of an underlying problem like deep decay, infection, a cracked tooth, or nerve inflammation.

  • Rinse your mouth with warm water. Gently floss around the affected tooth to remove any trapped food particles that might be causing irritation.
  • Apply a cold compress to the outside of your cheek to help reduce swelling and numb the pain. Avoid placing heat.

5. Lost Fillings or Crowns

When a filling or crown comes off, the underlying tooth structure is vulnerable, potentially causing sensitivity and pain and increasing the risk of further decay or fracture.

  • Keep the area clean. If you have the crown, keep it in a safe place. You can temporarily use over-the-counter dental cement to try and reseat a crown if it causes significant sensitivity, but this is only a very short-term fix.
  • We can assess the tooth and either re-cement the existing crown/filling or create a new restoration to protect your tooth from further damage.

6. Abscessed Tooth

An abscess is a serious infection that occurs at the root of a tooth or in the space between the teeth and gums. Symptoms often include severe throbbing pain, facial swelling, tenderness, a pimple-like bump on the gums, and sometimes fever or a bad taste in the mouth.

  • Rinse your mouth frequently with mild, warm salt water (1/2 teaspoon salt in 8 oz water) to help soothe the pain and may encourage drainage if it starts naturally.
  • Do NOT try to pop or drain the abscess, as this can spread the infection.
  • An untreated dental abscess can lead to serious, even life-threatening, health complications as the infection can spread to other parts of your body.

  • Performing root canal therapy to treat infection and save a damaged tooth
  • Draining an abscess and addressing the underlying infection
  • Extracting a tooth if it's too severely damaged or infected to be saved
  • Placing a temporary or permanent filling or crown

4. Follow-Up Care:

After your emergency treatment, we'll provide detailed instructions for home care to support your recovery. We will also schedule any necessary follow-up appointments to monitor your healing and ensure the long-term health of your smile.

Preventing Future Dental Emergencies

While not all emergencies can be avoided, taking proactive steps can significantly reduce your risk:

  • Wear a custom-fitted mouthguard during sports or recreational activities.
  • Avoid chewing hard items like ice, popcorn kernels, or hard candies.
  • Never use your teeth as tools (e.g., to open packages).
  • Maintain excellent oral hygiene: Brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste, floss daily, and attend regular dental check-ups and cleanings at York Dental.
  • Address teeth grinding (bruxism): If you clench or grind your teeth, especially at night, ask us about a custom nightguard.
  • Don't ignore minor issues: Promptly address small chips, sensitivity, or early signs of decay before they escalate into major problems.
